"TRANSPORTATION FOR AN INTERNATIONALIZED ECONOMY:
AN INTEGRATED NETWORK"

The Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization, U.S. Department of Transportation provided financial support for the TIE-IN program beginning on July 1, 1994.
- Del Mar College, Corpus Christi, Texas and Miami-Dade College, Miami, Florida were the only two community colleges in the country to receive this type of funding. Activities included an internship component, transportation lecture series, curriculum development, and two faculty fellowships.
- Activities included the provision of training and technical assistance to small, disadvantaged and women-owned business entrepreneurs in electronic commerce and electronic data interchange. Also included was an internship component, research on international trade patterns, on international trade, transportation and related business technologies.
- This continues and is an ongoing process due to the grant research and writing of those involved. The grant was approved for the 2000-2001 school year for Del Mar College.
THE TIE-IN PROGRAM PROVIDES STUDENTS WITH:
- Information on transportation and trade careers with public agencies and private companies.
- Special transportation-focused day and evening courses for full or part time students.
- Special assistance in applying for scholarships, summer jobs and internships.
- Free guest lectureships and workshops featuring Transportation Specialists and Business Executives.
THE TIE-IN PROGRAM PROVIDES BUSINESSES WITH:
- Information on Transportation and Trade business activities.
- Information on special Governmental Certification Programs as well as direct contracting and financial assistance activities.
- Assistance in accessing short-term lending and bonding programs for transportation projects.
- Technical and management assistance through an on-campus office of the Small Business Development Center.
